Hey partners, do you ever feel left out in the feeding of your baby? You might not have the appropriate plumbing to help directly with feeding, but there are many ways in which you can help!
One of the best things you can do is educate yourself in breastfeeding and the benefits of breast milk. It will be easier to support your partner in their breastfeeding journey when you believe in the benefits.
In the beginning weeks, or even months after bringing baby home, there are a lot of ways in which partners can help as well. It may seem simple, but helping with chores around the house can be a huge help for mammas. While mom and babe are busy feeding you can do some dishes or fold some laundry for her. This allows the mother to connect and bond with her baby and enjoy the feeding without having to stress about chores around the house.
During this time, limiting visitors can also be helpful for the mom. If possible, limit visitors to those who are supportive and helpful. Having meals made and help around the house from visitors can also be a big help for both parents.
Pumping is a great time for partners to be involved as well! You can play or cuddle with the baby while mom is pumping, and you can also feed the bottles to baby so you can feel apart of the feedings.
Every couple is different but determining roles before the baby arrives can be beneficial. For example, while mom is waking up every two to three hours to breastfeed, partners can change the dirty diapers. This way you are working as a team. Taking care of a new baby can be a lot of work but doing it as a team makes it a lot more bearable.
Partners need a support group too! Reach out to other dads and partners who have had babies of their own already and ask for advice and tips for supporting a breastfeeding mom. You will also have contacts to reach out to after the baby is here and you find yourself with more questions.
The best news is, breastfeeding is not the only opportunity to bond with the baby. Skin to skin has a plethora of benefits and is not just for moms! Yep that’s right, whip that shirt off and enjoy some skin to skin time with your sweet little babe.
Breastfeeding is a journey between mom and baby, but it is much easier with the help of a supportive and caring partner. You got this!
